COANA (Sebastiao Carlos) is a Mozambican-born Modern Artist.  Who's country, Mozambique, stretches itself from South to North along the Indian Oceans' coast, well known for the local food, afro music, dance, world cultural sites and wildlife.

My Childhood

I was born in 1987, during a time that my country was still in the 16 years bloody civil war, which
cruelly and strategically hit the population and government strongholds and infrastructures.

My childhood started before the General Peace Accords to cease fire in my country of October 1992. I am the second youngest child of three brothers and a sister. We grew up in a thatched roof home with no running water nor electricity, in a poor community of about 300 people called “muhoshana-Manhica” in South of Mozambique, where we lived until the beginnings of the 90's when my family immigrated to the Capital, Maputo city.

My parents never wanted me to know anything about politics and the civil war in my country at that moment, probably owing to I was still a 5 year old primary school boy. I recall, I used to question my mother about the white helicopters with blue log of the UN peace keepers flying in the daytime and night over my community…she would often smile to me, touch my little hand, look at my bright eyes and say: “They are bringing the peace!” And then I would be comfortable as, by those days, at least I knew that peace meant love and joy.

At 6 years old I was enrolled in the Munhuana Primary School in Maputo, where I started drawing as a school recreational activity. I always wanted to express myself but my words were not enough to be listened. I had a soreness about the every day life of my little friends, we where all victims of the actual social and political situation. Those days, most of children had lost their fathers who went battle for the peace, and never came back. The love of parents was lacking for these children. I felt it for them myself.

I found art as a way to express my feelings, and a way of voicing loudly to the society without opening my mouth. The love between parents and children, especially from the mother, inspired me the most in my artworks since the my 7 years old, time when I started doing art for the first time until today.

My mother is my inspiration in my work. That’s why most of my paintings have women's image, plus the child and African cultural and traditional tools. A Mother is the first one who shares the love for every being.

At 11 years old, I did my first research about the HIV/AIDS in my country and designed a cartoon to exhibit in my middle school. The cartoon was about the transformations of this virus in the Human blood, and also the father and the son open talk about the this pandemic. My teachers and friends encouraged me to draw more and also get involved in the school community fighting for HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention. I was still young and clearly afraid to talk about word “sex”. It was an obstacle that disappeared when I got into the Secondary School.
There, I became the leader of The Sexual and Reproductive Health Program for youth and teenagers in Francisco Manyanga Secondary School, in Maputo. It was also there where I joined the Advocacy Movement for the permanence of pregnant girls in public schools, supported by the UNFPA (United Nations Found for Population Development).

In 2004 at my 17 years old, I became a member of the 'Friends of the United Nations' a creator and head of various 'Groups of Action Toward Peace' (GAP). Led the creation of small groups in communities with the aim of taking actions to promote Human Rights and building a better world for everyone, rescuing Human Dignity. The activities went through supporting poor kids in education, art training, cultural activities, and talent promoting through dance, music, theater, teaching about children’s’ rights, etc.

Presently, I created a new group of action toward peace in China  named “Western China Volunteers” Community ( HEH - Hearts Eye Hands), based in Beijing Language University, is aimed to help children in western China.

I dream of a world where dignity is guaranteed for all people. I always gave my commitment to assure that everyone has the right to education, especially the children, the future of the humanity.

Im deeply concerned about the enormous waste of human potential in our world today. Many individuals are benefiting from endless advances in human knowledge, yet many others continue to fall behind. We should all be concerned about the growing threats to international peace, stability and prosperity due to rampant inequality in an increasingly interdependent world. We can not build a strong global future without supporting those who do not have bread to make them smile, and a pencil to write a word, express their feelings and also contribute in the Human beings struggles.
